“Welcome, Amal! We are The Welcome Party! We’re your new friends! We’ll show you around…”
To celebrate the arrival of Amal (Good Chance and Handspring Puppet Company) to Sheffield we are throwing an unforgettable performance party!
In weekly creative sessions, young people from Syria, Sudan and Afghanistan and their families come together to explore their creativity, make new friends and practise English. We share stories and food, we play games and our favourite music, we teach other dances, we practise our camera skills (we’re making a behind the scenes documentary!) and we plan the dream party for our special guest, Amal.
“welcome to our home… “
The Welcome Party were the first group to officially welcome Amal to Sheffield, greeting her at Victoria Quays in front of a gathered crowd of 3,000 people. We presented our performance poem, written by our young ensemble aged 4-18 and performed it with the Lord Mayor of Sheffield Gail Smith. We then led the parade, singing and playing the percussion, back to Tudor Square to enjoy the rest of this truly magical day.
